MEG BARONE WITH THE FAIRFIELD CITIZEN NEWSPAPER WROTE:
FAIRFIELD — Don’t be fooled by the GPS system directions for the colonial at 916 Sturges Highway, which tells motorists that this house is in Westport. It’s only half wrong, though. The house is actually located in Fairfield - the Greenfield Hill section to be specific, but it does have a Westport mailing address. It is that close to the neighboring town’s border.
It matters little which town the house is in. It’s a special property with a large pond that provides an opportunity for fishing in warm weather months and ice skating and hockey in winter. It is actually about the size and shape of a hockey rink. According to the listing agents the pond is man-made and dates back to Fairfield’s agricultural times when it was used to water animals and crops. But it’s not a true retention pond. It is fed by a small stream: Sasco Brook.
The pond has a fountain that goes on automatically every morning to help aerate the water body. At night lights automatically go on around the pond. There are benches on the pond to sit and relax.
The house was built in 1978 on a 2.38-acre level and sloping property. The house is up on a hill and the pond is down below so the wrap-around porch serves as a natural grand stand from which to watch ice hockey games. The house comes with a restaurant-style propane heater to take the edge off the cold on the porch.
It has 3,386 square feet of living space and an additional 1,240 square feet in the full finished walk-out basement. Belgium block lines the driveway to the house, which is set well back from the main road. From the covered and columned front porch enter into the grand two-story foyer, which has a hardwood floor in a herringbone pattern, vaulted ceiling and Palladium window.
The formal living room has a wood-burning fireplace and is open to the formal dining room. The latter has French doors that lead to the wood-paneled wrap-around screened porch which has three skylights. The home’s second fireplace, also wood-burning, is in the family room. It has a white brick surround and wood mantel. This room contains nine windows and two skylights that keep the room bright even on overcast days.
The family room is open to the kitchen, which features LG stainless appliances that were installed in 2012, a center island topped in a wood counter, breakfast bar, vaulted ceilings, and ceramic tile floor. Another set of French doors in the eat-in area also access the large wrap-around porch.
